Alice James, who retired as Perkins High School Girls Golf Coach in March 2019, has received the George Valentine Award from the Ohio High School Golf Coaches Association for her contributions to high school golf.
Mrs. James had been the PHS Girls Golf Coach for 19 years – and it’s a program that she started. She compiled an impressive 173-61 record over two decades. Among the highlights in her Perkins coaching career, she led the Lady Pirates to a team State Championship in 2012 and team member, Madison Mullins, to the individual State Championship the same year.
Mrs. James was a member of the State Coaches Executive Committee for nine years and was named to the Ohio High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014.
The George Valentine Award, which was presented to Mrs. James on Monday, May 2, 2022, is one of the most prestigious awards given by the OHSGCA. It is named after a founding member of the OHSGCA and its first president.
Summer (Seitz) Workman, a former PHS Girls Golf team member and member of PHS Class of 2014, recalled Mrs. James as a positive influence on her teams. “She made many sacrifices for her athletes and is the type of person who would give you the shirt off of her back,” said Mrs. Workman. “Thank you, Coach James for everything.”
Mrs. James continues to work at Perkins Schools as a counselor at Meadowlawn Intermediate School.
