Author Visits Highlight Right To Read Week At Furry

Paul Orshoski

Furry Elementary students, teachers, and staff will celebrate Right To Read Week with a series of author visits March 28 to April 1. The school also will host “We’re Dog Gone Crazy About Reading,” a family night from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

The Family Night is open to all families. There will be fun, games, treats, and (of course) books to read. Families can RSVP here.

Author Series

Furry Elementary’s author series will kick off on Monday, when Meg Bucher will visit with the students and staff, and talk about her writing. Mrs. Bucher, of Sandusky, is a freelance writer and blogger, and the author of “Friends With Everyone,” “Friendship Within The Love of Christ,” and “Surface, Unlocking The Gift Of Sensitivity.”

On Tuesday, children's author Terese M.G., of Cleveland, will meet with students and staff. Ms. Terese, the author of “Look AT Me! I Can Be,” founded the Movement Joy Company, a movement enrichment program to work with students of all ages and abilities within their school day. After observing that big motor skills and imagination together were so important for her students’ growth, she decided to use her music skills and compose "movement poetry."

“Freddie The Frog” author Sharon Burch will visit on Wednesday. Mrs. Burch is a music teacher, clinician, and author. She designs and creates “Freddie the Frog” resources for the music classroom. Mrs. Burch, from Iowa, also serves on the national Jazz Education Network Elementary Jazz Committee.

On Thursday, a familiar face, Paul Orshoski, will visit with Furry students and staff. Mr. Orshoski has written 14 children’s books, including “My Sitter Is a T-Rex” and “Who Took The Cookbook,” which he will focus on during his visit. Mr. Orshoski is a Perkins Township resident and public school teacher, coach, and administrator. Eleven of his grandchildren attend Perkins Schools, and Board of Education member Eric Lapata is his son-in-law.

Dora Wilbur, a former Edison Schools teacher and Norwalk resident, will meet students and staff on Friday. Mrs. Wilbur is the author of three books: “Lessons From Amy,” “Benjamin and Bon Bon Explore Winter,” and “Benjamin and Bon Bon Explore Summer.”

The author presentations will take place for Furry classes in the school’s library.
