The Perkins Local School District Board of Education has agreed to take the next step toward modernizing facilities and will gauge the community’s interest in updating school buildings.
On the recommendation of the district’s Master Facility Committee, the Board on Wednesday voted to hire the marketing firm Burges & Burges Strategists of Cleveland and solicit qualification statements from design and architectural firms.
The Master Facility Committee was created after the district adopted its Strategic Plan in January 2020. The committee, which includes several community members, has met six times to review the district’s buildings and grounds, and facility needs for students and education.
For its role, Burges and Burges representatives will take the pulse of the community to determine if there is interest in modernizing buildings that date back to the 1950s and 1960s – and a part of Perkins High School that was built in 1905.
“For me personally, I would love to see new facilities,” said Board President Jason Dulaney. “That is what I want for me and my family. I’m hopeful the rest of the community will join me in wanting that.”
Burges & Burges representatives in January 2022 will deliver a recommendation based on a series of surveys, interviews, and community forums.
Burges & Burges will conduct a minimum of 20 confidential interviews with elected officials, nonprofit and service organizations, safety personnel, and faith and business leaders. The firm also will host at least four “listening sessions” with small groups of teachers, parents, building personnel, and community stakeholders, and will conduct an online survey open to all community members.
The firm also has offered to engage a third-party firm to conduct a telephone survey to measure perceptions of the school district, its facility and capital needs, and the costs, benefits, and importance of updated facilities, and the feasibility of securing public funding support. The phone survey would not exceed a cost of $18,000.
Burges & Burges also will review the district’s communications with the community, and review materials regarding building condition, student data, and financial projections.
The firm is very familiar with Perkins Schools. It managed the district’s successful May 2017 continuing operations levy campaign and created the district’s Strategic Plan that was adopted in January 2020.
The firm will begin its work on August 1. The Board has agreed to pay the firm $30,000 over the next five months.
